The steep rock, on top of which the Monastery of the Holy Trinity is perched, is imposing and majestic. The visitor and pilgrim, tired from the difficult descent in the valley and the ascent to the rock, is richly rewarded with the magnificent view from the monastery’s balconies. To the south, at the foot of the rock, lies the town of Kalambaka, with the Pinios River lazily lying in its bed and the mountains of Koziakas and Pindos in the background. From the west you can see the Monastery of Varlaam and a little further on the Great Meteoron. To the east and very close by is the Monastery of Agios Stefanos.
The ascent to the rock of Agia Triada used to be done with a wind ladder and the traditional net. In 1925, during the reign of Metropolitan Polycarp [Thomas] of Trikki and Stagi and the abbot of the monastery Nikander Stathopoulou, the carved staircase with its 140 steps was built, which is used by today’s visitor.
According to tradition, which is not confirmed by other testimonies and sources, the monastery was first built in 1438 by a monk Dometios. We know absolutely nothing about this person. It is possible that, as was the case with most other meteoric rocks, the first hermits built their hermitages here at the beginning of the fourteenth century.
Already in a command of Simeon Ureesi Palaiologos, dated 1362, which is kept in the archives of the Monastery of the Great Meteor, “Meteoron and Agia Trias” are mentioned at the same time, which means that Agia Triada was an organized monastery at that time.
