Informative meetings for local educators by the Meteora–Pyli Geopark team
The educational communities of the Municipalities of Meteora and Pyli are launching the new role of the “Student Ambassador of the Meteora–Pyli Geopark,” aiming to enhance local community participation in promoting the area’s inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
Last Monday and Wednesday, two informative meetings were held in Meteora and Pyli respectively, attended by primary and secondary education teachers. During the sessions, they were introduced to the opportunities and responsibilities that arise for the local community following the Geopark’s UNESCO designation, as well as to the framework of the new “Ambassador” role.
Throughout the sessions, educators had the chance to learn in detail about the geosites that attracted UNESCO’s attention, the vast development prospects they open for the area, and the commitments expected from the local community.
To highlight these opportunities and responsibilities, all schools in the Meteora and Pyli regions are adopting the “GeoPark Ambassador” initiative. Each school will designate one student to act as an ambassador — informing classmates, peers, and family members about ongoing activities and the future prospects the Geopark offers.
The Ambassadors have already undertaken their first “mission”: to raise awareness among fellow students about the importance of water use in the Geopark, ahead of World Water Day on March 22nd.
The Geopark Ambassadors form the first action group that will actively participate in volunteer initiatives focused on the protection of geosites and the promotion of the Geopark concept throughout the local community, Greece, and the world.
Present at the events were the Director of Primary Education of Trikala, Mr. Chr. Trikalis, School Counselor Mr. V. Kotoulas, representatives from Environmental Education Centers, and officials from the Municipalities of Meteora and Pyli.
