Informing Educators of the Greek UNESCO Associated Schools Network about the UNESCO Global Geoparks Program
The online meeting titled “UNESCO Global Geoparks: Fields of Education for Sustainability” will take place on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 18:00.
As part of the ongoing collaboration between the Greek ASPnet and UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece, this event aims to inform educators—particularly those from schools participating in the Greek UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet)—about the educational opportunities available through visits to UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece and Cyprus.
This is an especially engaging topic for schools, as Geoparks serve as ideal destinations for educational programs that focus on geo-environmental studies and their interaction with the region’s natural, geological, and cultural heritage, whether tangible (monuments) or intangible.
The Role of Geoparks in Education and Sustainability
Geoparks aim to explore and highlight the interconnections between geological heritage and other aspects of a region’s natural and cultural heritage, fostering a stronger human connection to our planet. They play a key role in:
Educating about geological hazards and natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides).
Teaching about climate change and preserving records of past climate changes.
Promoting best practices in renewable energy use and sustainable tourism, in alignment with UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership initiative.
Raising awareness on the sustainable use of natural resources and fostering respect for the natural environment and landscape integrity.
The meeting is open to educational professionals and school staff who wish to learn more about UNESCO Global Geoparks.
