Gavros Landforms

Gavros landform is the continuation of the Meteora formation towards the north. The outcrop is composed of molassic sediments, conglomerates, and sandstones belonging to the Mesohellenic trough. The lower parts of the conglomerates show cross-bedding and are characterized as old undersea scree cones, while the upper parts also include layers of sandstone and siltstone. The composition of the conglomerates is mixed, showing their origin from the rocks of the surrounding areas.
The current morphology of the Gavros landform, as it happens also to the Meteora rock formations, is due to the recent tectonic activity in the area, which formed surfaces of discontinuities, giving way for water to circulate by eroding the materials of the molassic series, to form within geological time this unique morphology. The site is ideal for climbing activities.
