Katara site

Katara site

The neck of Katara, at an altitude of 1699 meters, is the passage in the mountainous relief of Pindos through which traffic from Northern Greece and Thessaly to Epirus was carried out for decades. In the area of Katara, the tectonic placement of the Subpelagonian ophiolites on the Pindos zone’s “wild” flysch is impressively displayed.

The Pindos “wild” flysch formation is a tectonic melange composed of gray siltstones, including blocks of Pindos zone limestones as well as sandstone blocks from the Pindos flysch.
